Software Asset Management

Standards

ISO/IEC 19770
The newly published ISO/IEC 19770 standard on software asset management covers six key areas relating to SAM:

Control Environment
Planning and Implementation
Inventory
Verification and compliance
Operations Management
Life Cycle

ISO/IEC 19770 is a process-based approach, and compliance will require the implementation of a set of demonstrable controls linked to a mature change management process

Information Technology infrastructure Library (ITIL)

ITIL's 'Best Practice in Software Asset management' is a comprehensive guide with a flexible, process based approach. ITIL is probably the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. ITIL provides a cohesive set of best practice, drawn from the public and private sectors internationally.
The best practice processes promoted in ITIL can also be integrated with other British Standards Institution's accreditations. Compliance with the ITIL methodology brings confidence that your processes are based on one of the most highly regarded industry standards.

Federation Against Software Theft (FAST)

The Fast standard for software compliance (FSSC-1:2004 Part 1) consists of controls relating to software asset management with a view to maintaining a compliant level of licensable applications. FAST accreditation requires membership and the appointment of a designated software asset manager by the organization.
It is not internationally recognised in the same way as the ISO standards detailed above.
